Who are SAAMI & What Do They Do?
The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute or SAAMI (Pronounce Sammy) is an association of US Firearm and ammunition manufacturers and are the people who set standards within the firearms industry. They are a US industry organisation who’s job it is to set standards on fire code, ammunition, chamber specifications and acceptable chamber pressure. SAAMI was formed in 1926 at the request of the US Government to set standards within the firearms industry.
I am writing about SAAMI because without them you probably wouldn’t be able to shoot Winchester 308 ammunition in a Ruger firearm or 204R ammo from Remington in a savage firearm. SAAMI have shaped the modern firearms industry by making standards for the majority of the worlds firearm and ammunition manufacturers stick to their standards. Every chamber cut and every bit of factory ammunition produced in the US and other places (Europe has its own version of SAAMI) falls within the standards that SAAMI have set out. This is important for safety and compatibility. Without SAAMI the shooting sports would be a far more dangerous and confusing place.
So there you go SAAMI are a relatively unknown but incredibly important part of the shooting sports.
Another important and relatively interesting thing SAAMI does is produce the chart of unsafe firearm and ammunition combinations which details situations where a smaller cartridge may fit in a firearms designed for a larger cartridge.
Out of interest here is a great video SAAMI did showing the testing of how hard it is for ammunition to go off when dropped, squashed, burnt. Its a great video. etc:
