New Night Vision Technology May Bring Night Vision To The Masses

A new technology may allow night vision to as ubiquitous as a camera in a mobile phone.

Funded by DARPA and developed by Franky So at Florida University, the paper-thin organic LED film works by detecting infra-red light in the first few of the seven layers which is then amplified by the rest of the layers. The new night vision will use considerably less power than current night vision tech and is likely to be significantly cheaper than what is available today.

Applications being mentioned are for moblie phones, car windscreens and eye glasses.

The new tech will be significantly lighter than current night vision tech.

Unfortunately there is no idea of the tech’s potential resolution and quality but I would imagine that it will be developed into some high-res applications. Franky So said his team was likely to be using it in real-world applications in 18 months and that his team also plans to develop heat detecting displays as well.

I would imagine that this technology would bring night vision to the outdoor industry in a big way. Imagine being able to buy a high quality night vision scope for less than $1000?

Or eye glasses that you could wear whilst shooting of a night? This has huge implications for night-time hunters that can’t afford current night vision gear so I hope to see this new technology take off.
