hunting 04032010080 Small First Sambar for the year.  With the weather cooling off a bit, the young fella’s went out for there first Sambar hunt of the season.

Luke and his good mate Matt, parked the 4×4 and donned back packs and headed into the bush a few kilometres to camp.

Next morning they woke up and hunted very close to camp. Within a few minutes they put up a hind and shortly afterwards Luke spotted this small Stag heading up the gully towards him. A quick shot with his new Tikka T3 in .338WM and the Stag was down. Not bad for his first shot at a deer with this rifle. With the deer on the ground the rest of the weekend was spent carting all the venison out.

Luke used a hand load of 68 grains of AR2209 behind a Hornady 225 grain soft point bullet. This rifle is topped off with a Clearidge 2.5-12.5×42 ultra XP5 scope. This combination of rifle, cartridge and scope, makes a fine all round hunting outfit.
