Now’s The Time To Learn How To Call Foxes
Well now’s the time of year to capitalise on calling in young dumb foxes.
Last seasons pups have left the dens and they are out after an easy feed with not much life experience so they just follow their stomach rather than their instincts so it allows beginners to make small mistakes whilst still achieving results. The time from November to March in my opinion is the easiest time of year to get good numbers of fox whereas late winter to early spring can provide a lot of frustration to even the most experienced fox callers.
Once upon a time summer fox hunting was a no no but that was back in a time where pelts were utilised and worth something. Now fox hunters I know can’t even sell their prime winter pelts so we may as well go out there and hone our skills or introduce newcomers to the sport of fox calling.
So for beginners here are the most basic things you need to do to call a summertime fox:
* Keep the wind in your face always.
* Where camo or drab clothing.
* Be infront of a tree or shrubbery that is in the shade. You will be far better off if you are in the shade.
* Be as quiet as you can
* Wind your scope down to its lowest power, foxes have been known to run right up and on top of fox callers.
*If there are two of you have the caller with a rifle and the other person with a shotgun. This way you have both bases covered if a fox chooses to come in close and fast or chooses to not come in past 50 meteres
* Call a stand for 20 minutes if there are no foxes coming after 20 mins move to the next spot. 90% of the foxes you will call will come in the first 12 or so minutes.
* Be mindful for snakes, take a first aid kit and take a hunting buddy if you can.
