Indian Myna Calling
I have had some Indian Myna calls for a while but never thought much of them until I decided to test them out one day.
I put them on my iPhone and plug the speaker in and let just their regular call play, I walked out the back where it was playing to find an Indian myna looking for my bird. I thought to myself that this was promising. So I went near a tree where I knew they were nesting and played it. It didn’t seem to make any difference whatsoever so after about 40mins of calling I went back up to my house and thought about trying the distress call that I had as well.
To test the distress call I played it on my veranda again and walked inside to get something. To my surprise I had attracted a few of the little buggers. So I get my air rifle and go sit in a spot where I thought they were likely to come to. After about 5 minutes of calling one showed up and I blasted him!
Since then I have found that in order for the myna’s to come to the call they have to be within a couple of hundred metres. This makes sense as if you shoot one myna out of a pair the other bird will almost always go down to investigate what happened to his mate. You usually get two in this case so it makes sense that the distress call will work well.
At the moment Sam & I are working on a myna decoy that will appear to be an injured myna bird in hopes that this will attract them to the one spot for easy shooting. It will be exciting to see how this goes.
The CD/Tape of the myna and magpie distress calls are available from some gunstores in New Zealand.

omfg!! you shot a f***ing bird?!?!? your disguisting!!
The Indian Myna is an introduced species and has been listed as one of the top 100 most invasive species of the world. Only 3 of the 100 species are birds. The Myna is wiping out native Australian birds at an astounding rate and spreading all the time. The Indian Myna also poses a health risk to humans if it roosts in your roof space by attracting bird mites.
So to answer your question – Yes keith shot a f***ing bird. He did it in the interest of your health and the health of Australian wildlife. He did it even though most people are as ignorant as you to understand why. I expect your next comment to be an apology followed by a thank you.
Cuddos Daniel.
They are a menace all over the world.
Hi, sounds like a good idea, so where can I get my hands on a copy of the distress call?
Very good. The photos are great because some people are confused with the Australian Noisy Miner which is protected.
Hi, just wondering how I could get a digital copy of your recorded distress call?
